With her soulful voice and sharp pen, Ali McGuirk blurs the lines between folk rock and R&B.
Ali McGuirk has never been a church mouse. In fact, these days, she stands at the pulpit. “I feel like I’m writing lyrics that preach,” McGuirk says with a laugh, realizing in real time how much her artistic voice has evolved during the writing and arranging of her latest album, Watertop. “I’m actually conveying a message, I’m not necessarily processing my feelings, but I’m conveying my thoughts on the subject. It made me feel like I was embodying a different role as a songwriter.”
Her 2022 album Til It’s Gone was widely acclaimed and praised for its authenticity, tenderness, and introspection. Her atmospheric songs earned her adoration and praise from audiences and were selected as one of the 50 best albums of the year by the Boston Globe.
