Choreographer Benjamin Millepied delves into the world of Barbara for his new choreographic creation. Influenced by French chanson since childhood, he draws on this intimate memory to create a dance inspired by the singer’s powerful melodies and finely crafted lyrics.
In a minimalist space, bathed in light and immaculate drapery, bodies appear and disappear, embodying the range of emotions that run through Barbara’s work—from nostalgia and passion to tenderness and tragedy.
In Du bout des lèvres, Barbara’s songs become the very breath of movement. In the manner of Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer or Balanchine’s great ballets, her waltzes resonate in the dance as a celebration of life. Millepied brings out a raw humanity, a vibrant poetry, faithful to the intensity of one of the most moving voices of the 20th century.
