“The portrait of Dorian Gray”
OSCAR WILDE / NICOLAS MAURY
by NICOLAS MAURY
piano JEREMY HABABOU
Staging and adaptation
Nicolas Maury & Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster
“At the crossroads, or rather at the meeting point between art forms, music (Jérémy Hababou), visual arts (Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster) and the body which intercedes, concentrates, condenses and then redeploys, the Actor and Director (me), have given life to this particularly peculiar landscape, which the « Portrait of Dorian Gray » is, in its original, uncensored version, not even rewritten by Wilde himself. His early versio, the youth of a masterpiece… since that is the main theme of this project.
In this show which I will compose like a path towards Beauty (of language, meticulous scenography, embedded images, 19th Century Irish music played on the piano, lights stemming from the ghostly flow) I will avoid — through a close collaboration with my partners — “the lone man on stage” style, that doesn’t reflect in any way the style of this work. What we’ll be dealing with here is an invasion of images, words, things, meanings, from the stage to the audience, with all of the sensuousness and the sometimes blinding clarity of Wilde’s unique tone and style.”
“One day, Nicolas Maury wrote to me that he had had an intense and floral vision for The Portrait of Dorian Gray: I said yes, and started dreaming.
There are many different dimensions in The Portrait of Dorian Gray…
About the search for times lost…
Of future tims, and Nicolas has all of that, all these presences, all these ages, all these voices,
And so we’ll perform it like some kind of perfumed, musical and multisensorial magic trick!”
